Abstract
The purpose of this study was to confirm if individual task-oriented recall therapy can be used for older patients with vascular dementia living in facilities and to verify the effects of this therapy on cognitive functions and problem behaviors.
Based on the selection and exclusion criteria, 2 older individuals with vascular dementia (participants A and B) were selected, and each task-oriented recall treatment was applied for a total of 15 sessions of 30 minutes each. The Interest Checklist (IC) was used to select intervention activities, and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Korean Version (MOCA-K) and the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disease (CERAD-K) neuropsychology tests were used to evaluate cognitive functions. An evaluation booklet was also used. Problem behaviors were evaluated using the Memory & Behavior Problem Checklist (MBPC) and the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire (NPI-Q). The differences in values before and after the intervention were analyzed; graphs were plotted and manually analyzed.
The MOCA-K and CERAD-K scores of both participants improved after the intervention, which suggests an improvement in cognitive function. Participant A showed no change in the MBPC and NPI-Q scores following the intervention, while participant B showed a decrease in both MBPC and NPI-Q scores after the intervention, which suggests that the problem behavior of participant B had reduced.
This study shows that individual task-oriented recall therapy can be used for older patients with vascular dementia, and treatment with this therapy can improve cognitive functions and reduce problem behaviors in these patients
